I ran across the path into the chalet my husband — already aware of my nighttime habits — had booked at a discounted price. On the hotel's website, one night in a one-bedroom chalet in February is listed at 8,000 Norwegian Krone, or $743. So, I peed in our private bathroom, slid into a real bed, with a real blanket, no dead reindeer or sleeping bag to battle with, and slept contentedly. But I'd only do it for one night, then off into the chalet for the next.

☆ Ancient Roman site of Pompeii is about to ‘expand’

So with ever more tourists cramming onto the site, the team behind the archaeological park of Pompeii have found a plan B – dispersing visitors around ancient sites that are further afield, with all-in-one tickets and shuttles laid on between the sites. A shuttle service around the sites – the Pompeii Artebus – was piloted in 2021. The ancient city was the most visited heritage site in Italy on the last “Domenica al Museo” – state-run heritage sites have free entry on the first Sunday of the month. Tickets for the ‘scattered’ site will be valid for three days, with free shuttles connecting all the sites. The Villa dei Misteri at Pompeii will also get new lighting which will better replicate the original lighting in the villa.

Venice's city council on Tuesday approved a long-awaited regulation to tax day visitors 5 euros ($5.38) to visit the city. Overnight travelers are exempt, though they're subject to a separate tourist tax implemented in 2011. Why is Venice taxing day visitors? The new tax is an attempt to "protect the city from mass tourism," Luigi Brugnaro, Venice's mayor, posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. The city of Venice currently fines visitors who eat or drink on the ground, sit on monuments and bridges, or swim in its canals, according to the city's website.

CNN —Venice has finally revealed the details for its entrance fee, making it the first city in the world to charge daytripper visitors. But this isn’t a permanent move yet – the Venice authorities have committed to a 30-day “experiment,” according to mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who shared the news on Twitter/X. Daytrippers over the age of 14 entering the “old city” of Venice – the entirety of the lagoon city – will have to pay. Americans are still booking short-term rentals for the summer at record rates, beating expectations. But the growing pool of Airbnb and Vrbo hosts means some hosts are seeing revenue drop up to 18%. Americans are still voraciously booking short-term rentals, despite economic uncertainty — and are even outpacing expectations. In January, analytics site AirDNA forecasted demand for short-term rentals, as measured by nights booked, would grow by 5% in 2023. "Travel brands and the service economy have outperformed expectations, and short-term rentals are no different," said Jamie Lane, chief economist at AirDNA.
